How to Create a Visual Identity That Feels Like You

Because your brand should feel as good as your favourite cup of tea.

There’s a difference between a brand that looks good and a brand that feels right. When your visual identity genuinely reflects who you are and what you’re about, everything clicks. It becomes easier to show up, share your message, and connect with the people you’re here to serve.

So, how do you create a visual identity that doesn’t just look pretty, but feels like you?

Let’s take it step by step (preferably with a warm brew in hand).

1. Start with the why

Before diving into fonts or colour palettes, ask yourself:
Why do I do what I do? Who am I doing it for?

Understanding your values, mission, and audience will help shape the personality of your brand. Are you bold and energetic? Calm and considered? Playful, earthy, elegant?

The clearer you are on your “why,” the easier it becomes to build a brand that aligns with it.

☕ Tip: Try journaling a few words that describe your business like it’s a person. (e.g. “friendly, creative, warm, grounded”)

2. Create a mood board that reflects you

Gather images, colours, textures, typography, and inspiration that make you feel something. Pinterest is your friend here, but so are magazines, interiors, outfits, and anything else that inspires your vibe.

Look for themes in what you’re drawn to. Are you leaning toward muted earth tones? Bold pops of colour? Hand-drawn textures? Minimalist layouts?

You’re not just picking what looks trendy, you’re collecting visual cues that tell your story.

3. Choose colours that feel aligned

Colour is powerful. It sets the tone before a single word is read. Ask yourself how you want people to feel when they see your brand.

Here’s a quick mood guide:

  • Blues – calm, trustworthy, professional

  • Greens – grounded, fresh, natural

  • Pinks – soft, creative, feminine

  • Yellows – warm, joyful, energetic

  • Neutrals – minimal, clean, timeless

Choose 2–3 main colours, and a few secondary or accent shades. Keep it simple, you want consistency, not a rainbow explosion.

4. Pick fonts that speak your language

Fonts carry personality. Are you looking for modern and clean, or quirky and hand-lettered? Elegant or bold?

Try pairing one display font (for headings) with a simpler one (for body text). And most importantly, make sure they’re readable!

☕ Bonus tip: Avoid using too many fonts. Two or three is usually plenty.

5. Tie it all together

Your visual identity isn’t just a logo or a colour palette—it’s how everything works together: your social posts, website, packaging, even your email signature.

Once you’ve got your elements in place, test them in real-world mockups. Does it feel right? Is it saying what you want it to say?

If not, tweak gently. This is about refining, not reinventing.

6. Be consistent (but allow room to evolve)

Once you’ve landed on your visual identity, stick with it! Repetition builds recognition and trust. But permit yourself to evolve over time, just like you do.

Brands grow. Tastes shift. That’s totally okay.

Final sip of advice

Creating a visual identity that feels like you takes a little time, a little curiosity, and a lot of heart. But once you get it right, everything clicks into place. You’ll feel more confident, more connected to your work, and more ready to show up as you, wherever your brand lives.

And if you need help bringing it all together, I’m just a tea break away. ☕
